questions, has been asked about popular music styles for over seventy years in this country. Even as far back as the 1920s
jazz, America's true classical music, was regarded as a symbol of barbarism, primitivism, savagery, and animalism. Stories
ran in newspapers such as the New York Times, warning parents about the evils of children listening to jazz. More recently,
from the music of Elvis Presley and Marilyn Manson to hip hop and rap, many people have tried to blame some of society's problems
on music and pop culture. Even the recent tragedy at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado has been blamed in part
